Our Deck Makeover Part 2: Painting a Platform Deck

So yesterday I showed you how we revived our old wooden patio set with a new coat of paint.  What a fantastic change!  But we couldn’t put a fabulously revived patio set out on to a terrible looking deck, so part 2 of our deck makeover took place!  So back to painting we went…

Today, I want to show you how we revived our platform deck.  Again, another amazing transformation with paint!  When we first moved into our home 6 years ago, our deck was so small, and never saw one ounce of sunshine.  So right away we tore down the railings and added a platform deck that extends out into our yard to reach the sun.  It’s low enough to the ground that we don’t need railings, which is exactly what I was going for.  I love the openness of our deck!  Then right after we built the deck we painted it.  BUT in our haste to get it painted we didn’t prep the wood properly and by the end of the summer most of the stain had rubbed off.  Such a disappointment to see after many hours of painting!  :(  Never again.  This time we wanted to do this right, and so we consulted the team at Home Depot.

We tackled the deck in 3 stages:
1.  Stripping
2.  Cleaning
3.  Painting

This was a big job, but we managed to get it done over a weekend, and it was worth every bead of sweat!  I love this deck.  The colour is exactly what I had envisioned for it – dark but not too dark – you can still see the grain of the wood underneath, and if we did everything right, we shouldn’t have to paint again for at least 10 years.  I’m crossing my fingers for that !

So come have a look!

BEFORE:

Very very sad indeed.  Splotchy.  Sad.  I hang my head in shame.  ;)

AFTER:

Fab!  Clean.  Sleek.  Love.

Here’s what we did:

Supplies we used:

  • Garden Hose
  • 3 Paint Pad Deck Stain Applicators (we used Shur Line Paint Pad Applicators)
  • Large Deck Brush for touch ups
  • Plastic sheeting to protect your grass/surrounding area
  • Behr Premium Wood Stain & Finish Stripper
  • Behr Premium All-in-One Wood Cleaner
  • Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Weather Proofing Wood Stain in Cordovan Brown

Our deck makeover process:  With advice from the trusted folks at Home Depot!  ;)

Step 1:  Stripping

  • First we cleaned our deck off by spraying it with the garden hose.   We were told NOT to use a pressure washer.
  • Then we let the deck dry overnight.
  • The next day, using the garden hose, we saturated the grass surrounding the deck with water, as per the instructions on the stripper & cleaner bottles.  Then we laid down some plastic sheeting over top the grass to catch drips.
  • Because our deck is treated wood, and it has some remnants of paint from our last application, we used a paint stripper to get it ready for painting.  We applied Behr Premium Wood Stain & Finish Stripper, and we followed the directions on the can very strictly.  A couple of years ago we skipped this step, and let me tell you what a mistake this was!  The paint did not stay applied, and basically peeled off by the end of the summer.  So we made sure to strip the wood this time.
  • For all of our applications of strippers, cleaners and paint, we used a Paint Pad Applicator (as mentioned above), which is essentially a rectangular flat sponge-like applicator that makes applying these liquids a cinch!
  • For the stripper, just follow the instructions on the jug.  The length of time this has to sit all depends on how much paint there is from before, but can vary anywhere from 5-45 minutes.  We had to add extra stripper to a couple of spots and do a little extra scrubbing.
  • When our deck was stripped, we moved on to the cleaning.

Step 2:  Cleaning

  • To clean the deck, again we used the paint pad applicator to brush on the wood cleaner.  We used Behr Premium All-in-One Wood Cleaner.  Again, we followed the instructions on the jug.
  • After the deck was cleaned, we let it dry overnight.  NOTE: with this cleaning system you have to paint your deck within 24 hours after cleaning it.

Step 3:  Painting

  • Using a fresh pad applicator, we painted the deck with Behr Premium Semi-Transparent Weather Proofing Wood Stain in Cordovan Brown.
  • While my husband applied the paint with the applicator, I followed behind him closely with my large deck paint brush, touching up and smoothing out paint drips and puddles.  I also made sure to paint in between the deck boards with this brush as we moved along.
  • We wanted our deck dark, so we ended up applying 2 coats of paint.  (letting the deck dry between applications)
  • We had to let our deck cure for 36 hours.

Note:  If you need extra instruction, Young House Love did a great post on how they did their deck.  It was from this post that I was inspired to use the paint pad applicators.  Let me tell you how amazing these things are!  Honestly, I think we were able to complete the deck transformation in less than half the time it would have taken if we had just used brushes!

I’m SO happy with the deck now.  This paint completely refreshed  and rejuvenated our deck.  It looks brand new!  Yay!

So here’s what it looks like with my newly painted furniture….Oh, I should also note that the little table in the above photo was also painted with the deck stain.  I thought about painting it the bright colour, but I thought it would be too much.  Instead I opted to paint it the same colour as the deck, and I’m really happy I did!

Whew.  We’re almost there.  Now it’s just adding flowers and pretty stuff…I can’t wait to show you how the deck all comes together!  Stay tuned!

Our Deck Makeover Part 1: Painting Deck Furniture

Hi everyone!  It feels like forever since I’ve posted!  What on earth?!  But there’s been a lot going on over here, and I have a lot to share!

One of the most exciting things for us is all the work we’ve been doing to our deck.  You might have already caught a peek if you follow me on Instagram.

Our deck has needed a makeover for a couple of years now, but the timing was just never right for us to tackle it.  All the work that needed to be done just seemed SO daunting.  And I’m not a big fan of painting, which is the majority of the work.  I love the after effect of painting, but all the prep work and waiting – oh man, it bites.  When it’s all done though, it’s so satisfying!

We also wanted to do it all without spending a lot of money.  In order to do that we couldn’t buy any new furniture, which was fine by me because I’ve always really liked the furniture we have.  It’s simple, easy to look after and is timeless in style.  All it really needed was some fixing and repainting…no problem!

So one day while shopping in our local grocery store, I saw some pillows and I immediately got a vision of what I wanted our deck to look like.  Weird how that happens sometimes!  Feeling inspired to make our deck an oasis, I got to work and made a list of all that we needed to:

First up:  tackling our old wooden furniture.

BEFORE

This set has great structure.  It’s simple.  But boy does it look sad.  And the deck…don’t even get me started.  Both are getting a paint job, but first I really wanted to paint this set.

I knew that I wanted it to pop with colour, because the rest of our deck was going to be dark.  So I got brave and chose a colour that was completely out of my comfort zone, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

AFTER

Pre-painting Preparations:

  • First I washed all the chairs, using the hose, and let them dry completely overnight.
  • The next day I used a light sanding block and gently sanded the chairs down.  I didn’t stress too much over this part.
  • After I sanded, I used a dry cloth to wipe off all the sanding dust.

Paint Information:

  • Behr Premium Plus Ultra: Exterior Semi-Gloss Enamel
  • Colour:  Cozumel:
Painting Information:
  • I tried to avoid having to give the chairs 2 coats of paint, so I was generous with the paint on the first application (as generous as I could be without having drip marks).  But I did end up having to do a light second coat.  Overall though, this paint really applied and covered well.

When I first started putting it on I have to admit I got a few heart palpitations.  But right away I knew it was going to look fabulous!
I am so happy with it, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love it!

The colour pops off the deck, but isn’t at all overwhelming.  You’ll really be able to see that when I show you our whole deck (coming soon).  It’s really just the perfect punch of colour!

Love love love it.  Did I mention I love it?!  ;)

And that deck…would you look at that stain?!  Fab-u-lous.  Can’t wait to show you that next!

I’m very very happy with how it turned out.  Even after a few choice words while I was painting nooks and crannies, I’m so happy I tackled this project.  The power of paint is amazing isn’t it?!

Now, you can find me outside on my ‘new’ patio set sipping some lemonade.  Life is good.  :)

Thank you for coming by!

Have an inspired day!

Fixing Outdoor Rattan Furniture

Well we’re in full on spring mode over here and loving every bit of it!  The weather has been co-operating so we’ve managed to tackle a lot of things in our yard, namely our deck, which I can’t wait to show you!  We’ve painted it, repainted old furniture and basically just fixed a lot of stuff that needed fixing!
Including our deck furniture.

I love our deck furniture.  It’s made of weaved plastic rattan that has stood up against the elements for quite a few years.  But we haven’t been diligent in covering it during our brutal winters, so time has taken a bit of a toll on the chairs.  The weaving has cracked and come undone on some of them, so they desperately needed some TLC.  I’m not ready to let them go just yet, so I decided to fix them myself.

In the back of my mind, because I’m weird like that, I remember my Dad using contact cement to fix things.  I don’t know why I remember that, but I do.  So I went over to our local Home Depot, and asked if contact cement would be the right material to fix my plastic rattan chairs.  And apparently it is.

So I bought a bottle (it’s super cheap $8 a bottle) and set off for home, very excited to fix my chairs!  Because you can’t go through all the trouble of making your deck look amazing, then have terrible looking furniture!

Here’s How To:

  • First I cleaned the furniture, then waited for it to dry completely.
  • Then I re-weaved the strands of plastic that had come undone.
  • Then I followed the directions on the bottle of contact cement, just glueing down the ends and pieces that were sticking out.  PLEASE read the directions on the bottle of contact cement.  You MUST follow them to ensure the glue cures.
  • That’s it.  Super simple.

Here’s how the tops of some of my chairs looked before, then after I applied the contact cement:

Fan-tab-u-lous!  My chairs look brand new.  This makes me very very very very happy.  (I’m easily pleased.)  But really, this is amazing to me!  And it took less than an hour to do.  Really.

So this weekend if you are looking for something to do, go fix your chairs.  And you’ll find me sipping bevvies on our new deck.  Ahhhhh.

Have an inspired day!
