My Winter Inspired Yarn & Rosette Wreath

I know these yarn wreaths are everywhere in Bloggyland, but I adore them. Adore. Adore. Adore. They are so pretty and delicate. So I made one. This colour combination was inspired by our cold winters of ice, snow, and crisp blue skies.

I have put together a quick tutorial. I do caution that this project is ~~so fun~~ tedious. It has made me go cross eyed, and I have burnt my fingers with my glue gun again. And my husband is cursing the mess, and the fact that I have been working on this for a wee bit of time today. (but I did NOT take this in the van with us on the way to Starbucks this afternoon. I wouldn’t do that. Nope.)

Tedious as it was, I think the results are worth it!

My Yarn & Rosette Wreath Tutorial

I used a 16 inch styrofoam wreath. (Blimey these are expensive!!)

I also used an entire ball, plus about a 1/4 of a second ball of yarn. Each ball measures 150m.

You will also need sheets of felt for the rosettes.

Start winding it around the wreath. There are a number of options on how to do this. I chose to do my winding quite precise, with each string lining up neatly with the next. The tricky part about this type of winding was how the end parts didn’t match up – as you can see in the picture below.

What to do!? Don’t sweat it! Even though they don’t match up, it still worked out okay, because I wound 2 layers of yarn around the wreath.

Once you have done 1 layer, at this point you can decide whether you need to add another layer. Mine needed one, and as tedious as it was, it was a good decision.

Here is what it looks like all wound. You can’t really tell where my little mess was. Plus I ended up covering that spot with the rosettes anyway.

Now for the rosettes. I also made rosettes for my Christmas stockings. But I’ll post this how-to again here, only because it is SO much easier to work with felt.

So basically cut out a circle and wave the edges. The bigger the circle, the bigger the rosette. My largest flowers are made from 1 full sheet of 9×12 felt.

Then cut a spiral in your circle. For the largest flowers, I cut into the circle, a little larger than 1 cm.

And wrap. I make the centres tight, and get a little looser as I go. (~~Please~~ ~~do not look at my terrible, terrible hands. I seriously need to use lotion every 5 minutes. And I need a manicure!)~~

Once you have your rosette wound, use the little circle centre you are left with at the end of your spiral, and glue it to the bottom of your flower. Then add them on to your wreath, as you see fit! Get creative!

I also made my own wreath hanger. I just braided the yarn I had, and as you can see, glued on 3 teeny rosettes. I think it finishes it off nicely!

Whew. All done. I do want to make one more for Valentines Day, so stay tuned for that! And have fun with this, there are so many neat ways to make these. Just do a Google search for inspiration!
