Nawrap Dishcloths

Nawrap Dish Cloths

I discovered these Nawrap Dish Cloths this summer at a little shop here in Calgary called Piece on Peace and now I’m hooked (you can also buy them on Amazon).  They’re the best.  They wipe up so nicely, don’t get smelly and are really tough. The unique thing about them is that they are made of charcoal fabrics which are infused with binchotan, the highest grade of charcoal. And because of this, the fabric naturally absorbs odours and bacteria. No more smelly dishcloths, yoga towels or bath towels!  These have become a kitchen must-have for me!

De’Longhi All Day Grill

De’Longhi Livenza All Day Grill

Next on my list is the De’Longhi Livenza All Day Grill.  This grill is so great!  What I love most about it is that it has actually replaced 3 of my appliances at home…it’s a waffle iron, grill and griddle all in one.  So I can make pancakes or waffles in the morning, then grill steak or chicken on it at night.  And it’s a perfect size, so I can easily fit it into my cupboards without it taking up the entire space.  What also makes it great, is that it folds open to lay flat, so you can make up to 16 pancakes at a time!  And the plates are dishwasher safe.  So good.

– – – – – –
Teal Bread Box

Bread Box

This Teal Bread Box is a fun gift  idea…I love adding unique and colourful pieces to my kitchen.  I actually bought this box this summer because I couldn’t resist the colour.  Ok, I also bought it because I was so tired of all the half loaves of bread all over the counter…I can’t stand kitchen counter clutter.  This one is a little smaller than I expected, but I actually ended up really liking that because we don’t end up with too many loaves of bread on the go.  This would be a fun gift for someone who loves unique and functional kitchen pieces.

Rolling Pins

These are the most fun find I have come across this year!  These are rolling pins made out of recycled hardwoods and skateboards.  They are made locally here in Calgary by Martinus & Adrian Pool, but you can also purchase them online, along with a number of other items such as serving bowls.  What a fun and unique gift idea!  And they’re handmade.  I love local, handmade gifts.  I would LOVE to find one of these under the tree this year!

Williams Sonoma Traditional Finish Loaf Pan

Loaf Pans

I received these loaf pans as a gift last Christmas, and I absolutely love them…in fact I tell anyone I can that if they like to bake, these Williams Sonoma Traditional Finish Loaf Pans are a kitchen must!  I’ve never had loaves bake as even or as perfect as I have since I started using them.  They’re not that expensive either, so they’d make a great gift!

– – – – – –

Paderno Spiralizer 4-Blade

Spiralizer

I love my Paderno 4-Blade Spiralizer, and use it all the time to make zoodles.  They’re also great for spiralizing all kinds of vegetables for salads and side dishes.  This is a great gift for the foodie that has everything!

– – – – – –

Nordicware Sheet Pan

Sheet Pans

Sheet pans are so great for 1-dish sheet pan meals!  The Nordic Ware Sheet Pans are especially great…they cook evenly and clean easily.  I also love how versatile they are.  These would make a great gift for your foodie.

– – – – – –Pink Tea Set

Tea Set

This pretty little Tea Set would make a great gift for the tea lover in your life!  I love my little mug and also use it every day for my coffee.  This would be great for gift exchanges and as a teacher gift too!

– – – – – –

Simple Bites Cookbook

Cookbooks

I love receiving cookbooks at Christmas!  There’s just something so nice about flipping through a cookbook and marking pages of things you want to make.  This year I’ve added the Simple Bites Cookbook to my Christmas wish list.  The author, Aimee Wimbush-Bourque, has the most delicious and beautiful recipes.

– – – – – –

Pie Crust Cutters

Pie Crust Cutters/Stamps

These Pie Crust Cutters/Stamps would make great stocking stuffers!  If you follow along with my blog you already know my love of pie stamps, and that I use them all the time for my pies.  They’re such a pretty and easy way to make pie crusts, and I want them ALL!

– – – – – –

Aqua KitchenAid Mixer

KitchenAid Mixer

I had to add this Aqua KitchenAid Mixer to my wish list…this mixer, in this colour, is an absolute dream to me.  I do have a KitchenAid Mixer and have been using it for almost 19 years, and am amazed that it’s still going strong all this time later.  But a girl can dream right?  😉

– – – – – –

I hope you found some gift inspiration here, for your own holiday shopping!  What’s on your wish list this year?

Disclosure:  I received the De’Longhi All Day Grill for review, but if I didn’t love it there’s no way I would have included it in my holiday gift guide!  Only things I love and use end up on these lists!

A Teenage Girls Holiday Gift Guide

I’ve put together A Teenage Girls Holiday Gift Guide to give you some ideas for this hard to buy for age (13-16)!

– – – – – – –

Teenagers are so hard to buy gifts for…especially girls because they can be very particular about the things they wear and want.  Actually let me rephrase that, if you don’t have a good list they are hard to buy for.  But given the opportunity to provide a list of things they want, I have found from experience that teenage girls are more than happy to tell you what they like!

This Teenage Girls Holiday Gift Guide was put together by my daughter who is 14 (grade 9).  And she is a very girly girl so most of the items on this list are pretty feminine!  I think it’s a wonderful list of things and I’m so happy she took the time to put it together for you!  I hope you can find some ideas for the teenage girl in your life!

A Teenage Girls Holiday Gift Guide

Too Faced Chocolate Shop

This The Chocolate Shop Make Up Set by Too Faced is high on the list for my teenage girl!  Confession…I kind of want it too.  It comes with 21 eyeshadows, luminizer, bronzer, blush and primer.  So pretty.

– – – – – – –

abh-glow-kit

One thing I have noticed about my daughter and her friends is that they are all really into make up.  I have no idea why they need so much and so many of the same things, but I don’t ask.  This Anastasia Beverly Hills GLOW KIT (it’s a highlight powder kit) is also on my daughter’s list this year.

– – – – – – –

Curling Wand

Another thing you may also have noticed with teenage girls, is that most really like to do their hair.  This Ceramic Curling Wand would make a great gift for those who want to create curls with no kinks.  If this ends up in our house, chances are that I will use it too…curling wands make great curls and beach waves in long and short hair!

– – – – – – –
tna-hat

This Aritzia Lakeview Hat in Black & White is also on the list.  I’m not much of a hat person, but hats on my daughter are adorable.

– – – – – – –

mini-kit-vials-v4

More make up.  This Kylie Cosmetics Mini Kit of Matte Liquid Lipsticks is a hot gift this holiday season. This is the make up line from Kylie Jenner.  Also I’ve noticed that matte lipsticks are all the rage and I actually really like them.  I included one on my Women’s Gift Guide as well.

– – – – – – –

Blurry Face T-Shirt

I find clothes to be the hardest thing to buy for when it comes to teenage girls.  They are very particular, and I wouldn’t dare buy any item of clothing without approval!  But this 21 Pilots Blurry Face T-shirt made the cut on my daughter’s wish list this year.

– – – – – – –

10791874_hi

I don’t really know much about Melanie Martinez, and I don’t ask.  But I do know that my daughter likes her music, so this Melanie Martinez Pacifier Necklace is on the list.

– – – – – – –

Mandala Wall Tapestry

My daughter is on a mission to update her bedroom this year and has put together some really nice ideas of things she’d like to see in her space.  Wall tapestries are really popular right now, and this Mandala Wall Tapestry is the one she has picked for her room.  I actually really really like it.  She plans to string some white lights along it as well.  Ahhh to be young…I had similar decor in my university days.

leirvik-bed-frame-white__0250175_pe388522_s4

But #1 on my teenage girl’s wish list this year is a new bed frame!  She is hoping this white steel bed frame from IKEA ends up under the tree this year!  I like it as well because it’s pretty and the price is really reasonable.  We’ll see what Santa has to say.

– – – – – – –

o92straighttgoma-1000x715-tinypng

Now here’s a really fun one!  A trampoline is actually on all of my kids wish list this year, and fingers crossed we end up with one!  We currently have a trampoline but it’s a complete hazard with no nets, no pads, nothing.  It’s actually quite frightening haha!  But it’s well loved and gets used almost every day.  It’s time for a new one, so this Springfree Trampoline is on our whole family’s wish list this year.  This Springfree Trampoline has the tgoma digitally interactive game system designed to engage every member of the family…there’s even a program for us moms!  Come on Santa!

A Men’s Holiday Gift Guide

A Men’s Holiday Gift Guide to help you with shopping for the men in your life!

– – – – – – –

Today I’m super excited to share a post written by my husband, Tobin!  I thought it might help you to have some ideas for gifts for the men in your lives, because I know how hard they are to buy for.  Seriously, why are men SO hard to by for?  I hope this guide will give you some useful ideas so you can get your Christmas shopping done relatively stress free!

 The Hubbys Christmas Gift Guide

Hello A Pretty Life readers, I’m Tobin, the husband behind the blog!  I’m hoping that I can shed some light into what to buy for your men this holiday season.

Whoever said it is better to give than to receive never got a custom splitting axe for Christmas.  Being a husband and a father seems to have triggered some sort of auto response when asked for a gift list for the holidays.  “Oh, I could use some work shirts, a new pair of gloves, maybe a new shaving kit…”  I ask for the practical things, the everyday things that we need…BORING!  Sure the shaving kit is something I need but let’s be honest, I am just going buy it anyway.  Do you want see your guy light up like a Christmas tree?   Give him something he wants, but would never buy…let’s do this!

gransfors-outdoors-axe-620x338

For the Outdoorsman

I love to go camping.  One of my favourite things to do when we camp is split wood for the fire.  Most axes out there are run of the mill, big box store axes.  Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the mainstream axe – they cut wood just fine.  But when you pull up to the group campground and your guy can pull out an axe with hand forged steel and an American Hickory handle, he is going to chop wood like a champion and be the envy of every firestarter in the campground.  If your guy already has an axe, you can never go wrong with a camping hatchet.  If your guy splits wood in flip flops you may want to skip this one…I’ve added one of these Gransfors Bruks Axes to my list this year.

JORD Men's Watch

For the Every Man

Guys either love watches or hate them, there is no in between.  If your guy hates watches, I am sure we can find him something else…unless he splits wood in flip flops, then he is on strike two.  For the rest of us, watches are an indulgence.  Most guys will have an everyday watch that works well but never the fancy one because we’re either just too practical or we don’t want to spend the money on ourselves.  But really, a great watch is a nice way to round out an outfit and make a guy feel good.  I think we need to view watches as a great accessory to an outfit.  We need to look and feel good too!  And there are amazing affordable watches if you know where to find them.  I was recently introduced to a brand called JORD, and not only are the JORD watches very stylish, they are made of wood, which I think is so unique and awesome.  JORD watches are hand-crafted wood timepieces that come in a variety of colours and styles.  I chose this Ebony and Rosewood Jord Watch, and I love it.  It’s classy, unique and goes with everything.

For the Cook

I love to cook and have been using an old set of knives we got over 15 years ago as a wedding present.  They work fine and I could probably use them until I either cut off all my digits or get so old I only eat mushy food, but where is the fun in that?!  If I find Japanese handcrafted steel under my tree this Christmas, I am going to be happier than Godzilla rampaging through Tokyo.  Paring knives are a good start and chef knives are over the top.  For the guy who already has a good set of knives, try a pair of kitchen shears.  This is one of those win-win gifts, your guy is inspired to cook more and you can enjoy the spoils of his labour!  I’ve been eyeing up knives from Knifewear.com!

For the Fashion Conscious

Guys can be horrible to buy clothes for.  A safe bet for things that always fit are socks and underwear.  Now I know what you are thinking, socks and underwear are boring.  Not so fast, you can make them exciting…and not in an edible, weirdo kinda way.  Online sock stores have come along way from the knee high 80’s gym sock special…unless you are a hipster, they pay a premium for those.  For the rest of us, nothing beats a funky pair of socks, the wilder the better!  My kids gave me these socks from Sock It To Me this year and I love ‘em!

– – – – – –

sxbm35_bup_1

Next up is underwear.  Gone are the days of Dad opening up the old 3 pack of tighty whiteys.  No child needs to sit through that 5 minutes of uncomfortableness.  Give your guy the gift of comfort and joy.  I was put onto Saxx this past year and they are without a doubt, the MOST comfortable and life changing underwear in the universe. Plus, they have a lumberjack print that goes great with the Axe.

For the Shoe-a-Holic

Does your guy have 50 pairs of sneakers?  Does he come home with a new pair of kicks everytime he goes shopping?  Are his shoes carefully showcased in your closet?  If you answered yes to any of these questions you have a Shoe-A-Holic on your hands.  If you want to Mic Drop the Shoe-A-Holic this holiday season, go online and order a pair of custom shoes.  Many top brands have custom options where you can take your guys favourite shoes, pick unique colors and patterns, add text, and essentially make a one of a kind shoe that no one else on the planet has.  Nike and Vans, both have pretty cool custom options!

For the Time Crunched Guy That Needs Some Exercise

This one is near and dear to my heart and a gift I gave to myself.  We have three kids and our family is always on the go, between work and family commitments there is barely enough time in the day to stop and think.  I needed exercise but wanted to do something fun, fast, and as a total body workout that I could drop into anytime.  Seems like a lot to ask right?  Well, I found 9Round 30 Min Kickbox Fitness and it is AWESOME.  9Round is a 30 minute kickboxing themed workout consisting of 9 different stations that you do in 3 minute intervals.  I get to sweat hard, get a great workout, and punch and kick ALL my stresses away in 30 minutes.  The stations change everyday so no routine is the same, and the trainers are amazing!  Again, a win-win gift.  Your guy turns into a chiseled stud…or at least is a lot less stressed and can swing the axe a few more times without breaking a sweat!

For the Garage Guy

Everyone knows that one guy who has a garage that is immaculate.  You could eat off the floor, he has every tool known to man, and his garage is his man cave.  If you don’t know this guy, you should find one, he is super handy.  One thing the Garage Guy usually neglects though, is the garage door opener.  How could a garage door opener be unique and cool?  Let me tell you.  I have a Ryobi garage door opener in my garage and every single guy that comes to the house marvels at it.  The Ryobi opener is super quiet, like sneak-into-the-house-at-3AM-and-not-wake-the-baby-ninja, quiet.  The Ryobi opener also comes with several optional attachements…retractible cord reel, laser parking assist, fan, bluetooth speaker…this thing is like the Swiss Army knife of garage door openers and the accessories make great birthday or Fathers Day gifts.  Another cool feature that I love is that I can open my garage door from my phone, from anywhere.  I can also get alerts on my phone if the door is open too long or if my kids are trying to sneak in at 3am like ninjas.  And if you ever forget your house key and are locked out of the house, and your garage door is locked on vacation mode because your kids fiddled with the opener, leaving you stranded outside in minus 10 degree weather, but you have your phone, you are saved because you can disable said mode with the app.  Ask me how I know.  Best garage door opener ever.  For real.

For the Beer Drinker

Part of the reason I need to go to the gym is my love of craft beer.   An easy gift for craft beer lovers are  large format bottles (think 21 ounce/650 ml), these are great as stocking stuffers.  Check out your local breweries, they usually  have unique seasonal offerings that most Beer Guys will be happy to try.  To take your Beer Guys tasting experience to the next level you can put a set of tasting glasses under the tree.  The Spiegelau glass set will tickle any beer geeks tastebuds and have him blaming the turkey for his post dinner ”nap”.  IPA, Stout, and American Wheat Beer Glasses are a good start for any Beer Guy.

– – – – – –

bundle-128flexpints_grande

If you really want to spoil your Beer Guy, help make his favourite brew portable.  Most Craft Breweries have growler bars.  For the non beer type, this is essentailly a tap where you put a bunch of beer in what looks like a moonshine jug.  The problem is the beer is usually only good for two days in the usual Growler format.  But not with the ManCan!  The ManCan utilizes CO2 cartridges (awesome), stainless steel casing, and threaded fitting and gasket seal (super awesome) to give you 30 days of crafty beer freshness (mind blowingly awesome).  You can also order online and get it personalized with logo’s, graphics etc to make your Beer Guys ManCan a one of a kind!

– – – – – –

And with that, I leave you to find that special gift for that special someone…assuming that special someone is not a flip flop wearing, watch hating, underwear avoiding, non drinker who hates exercise.  If that is the case, soap on a rope might do the trick.

 Happy Holidays,

Tobin  (AKA the blogger husband)

My Favourite Things! A Women’s Holiday Gift Guide

It’s been a while since I put together a Favourite Things post!  Sometimes it’s really just all kinds of fun to wish and dream about what you might like to have appear under the Christmas tree.  And my husband likes it when I do these posts because it really helps him with his Christmas shopping, and it’s a win for me because honestly it’s just way too much work trying to explain everything.

So I thought I’d put together my Christmas wish list along along with a few of my favourite things.  It’s kind of like the good old days when Oprah hosted her Favorite Things show…man I miss that.

Fave

This Christie HD Radio by VQ is the coolest thing ever.  I was recently sent one from VQ to review, and I have to tell you how much I love this little unit.  You can play music through this adorable speaker right from your own music library or streaming service via Bluetooth from any smart device like an iPod, iPhone, computer, or iPad.  Since I plan on using this speaker alot, I have put it next to my kitchen space so I can listen to music while I cook.  Doesn’t it look so cute there?!  This would make such a great gift!   And you’ll be happy to know that it comes in a number of different colours (including teal!)…I chose the black and cream because I wanted it neutral for my home.  Love love love

Wish

At the Finding Stillness workshop I attended in September, I was introduced to Rough Linen.  Kim had a pinafore that I absolutely fell in love with and I imagined myself cooking and creating all the things in my very own!  So naturally I have added this Rough Linen Pinafore to my Christmas list.  Isn’t it gorgeous?!

Fave

Recently I was sent this FjallRaven Greenland Winter Parka to try, and as soon as I opened the package I loved it.  It’s exactly the kind of coat I picture myself in this winter.  It’s rustic but cute, and practical and pretty.  This jacket is wind and water resistant, and the hood and the inside of this parka is lined with a warm teddy-pile lining, so it will be perfectly warm for our harsh winters here in Alberta.  It would be good for hiking but also for running around doing everyday things.  I also really like the length of this jacket, with having to pick up kids from school and running errands and working, I like to feel fully covered up…if my butt isn’t covered in the winter I feel cold…know what I’m saying?  😉   I also like that this jacket has a lot of pockets for your things, plus two hand warming pockets…so great!  If you want to see more, there are a lot more winter coats for women, as well as a number of other great outdoor items on the FjallRaven Canada site!  This jacket would make a great gift!

I have had my eye on these Luxe Blankets by Top Knot Style for a couple of years now!  I mean just look at them…what’s not to love?!  They look so soft and delicious!  I also love that these are made locally (in the Edmonton area) by the very talented Amanda of the blog, Natural Mommie.

I discovered another great business at my Finding Stillness retreat and that is We are Caribou.  They make hand carved, wooden kitchenware at their Manitoba homestead, and it is all SO gorgeous!  I have added these maple bread boards to my wish list this year!

 pina-styles

Fave

On our recent visits to Ucluelet, BC, we discovered a great clothing shop called Pina Styles, and their shirts and sweaters have quickly become some of my favourite!  All of their clothing is created and printed with original designs on comfy sustainable clothing, and all of the designs are amazing!  One of the best things about their shop is that you can actually pick the art you want on your clothing.  When I was there this summer I chose this anchor and school of fish for my shirt, then I when I got back home I discovered that they also have an Etsy shop.  So now I don’t have to drive 15 hours just to buy my favourite shirts!  I recently just ordered this Skeleton Mermaid Design on a Slouchy Shirt and I love it!  Love love love.

sorel-tivoli-ii-pull-up

Fave

This year I splurged on a pair of winter boots…I love boots and shoes and purses because they always fit…they don’t just stop fitting because you had too many pieces of chocolate cake, am I right?  Plus, in this climate a girl needs a pair of pretty and practical winter boots…yes there is such a thing!  I bought these Tivoli II Pull-On Boots by Sorel, and I adore them.  It’s funny too, because every time I wear them, someone asks where to buy them.  They’re a great boot, and they look great.  You can see me wearing them in the picture above…love them.

We LOVE LOVE our new Saeco GranBaristo Avanti.  This is a splurge for sure, but honestly I’ve never had better coffee!  It can make almost any kind of coffee you can imagine:  Regular Coffee, Americanos, Cappuccinos, Espressos, Lattes, Flat Whites, Ristrettos, Macchiattos, as well as steamed milk or plain hot water for tea.

This new model also has some really fantastic features!  Using the Saeco app, you can choose from 18 drink options and brew directly from your smart device.  So you can be laying in bed and with the press of a button your coffee will brew.  Awesome.  There’s also a really neat feature that you can use while entertaining: you can take all of your guest’s coffee orders through the Queue Order function, fully customizing each drink to their preferences, all on the app before even leaving the dinner table.  Aside from all the great features I also really like it’s sleek look, and compact size.  It fits right in the same space as my old coffee maker.  This would make an amazing Christmas gift for the coffee lover in your life!

Funny thing about this lipstick is that my teenage daughter introduced it to me.  I’m actually not a big lipstick wearer for a couple of reasons…one I haven’t found a shade that I really like, but the biggest reason is that most lipsticks give me cold sores which is so so annoying.  But after I saw my daughter wearing this matte lipstick I wanted to try it.  I loved the matte look and how natural it looked on her lips.  So I went to Sephora and bought this Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick  (in matte soft nude), and I love it.  I love the colour, it stays on for a long time, it isn’t sticky (my hair doesn’t get stuck in it), but most important to me, it doesn’t give me cold sores!  So now I wear lipstick and I feel like a big girl.  Ha!

skoah-aha-mask

Fave and Wish

This Skoah Aha Mask is one of my favourite beauty products and since I’m almost out, I’m adding it to my Christmas list this year (hint hint honey)!  I first tried this mask when I went for a facial at Skoah, and after this mask was applied I was shocked at how soft and dewey my face was!  I was so happy (and surprised) that it didn’t irritate my skin or turn it bright red like a lot of products do.  Since I loved it so much I bought a container, which has lasted over a year, but now I’m out and need another.  This is a fantastic product.  I love love it.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Thank you for reading all the way to this point…I hope you may have found some inspiration for yourself or the women on your Christmas list.  I had fun putting this together!

What do you have on your Christmas list?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Have a very Merry and inspired day!
